Association with Zwave switch only works temporarily

Looking for a way to manually control my blinds, I've tried configuring an association with an Evolve LTM-5 switch.   The association works, but only for a short time after I interact with the blinds via smartthings.   i.e  if I open the blinds via the app, I can immediately open/close them with the switch as much as I want, but if I wait a minute it will no longer work.   I'm not sure what I'm missing.  Can anyone please help

Two things that might help:

 

Make sure to have the current device handler loaded.

 

I have much better luck using the Smartthings Classic app.  It seems to send the commands even if the commanded device is considered offline.
