iBlinds & Vera not working with Alexa

My iBlinds are working great within Vera.  However, Alexa can't seem to find/recognize (work with?) iBlinds within Vera.  In Vera, the blinds are named 'Side Blinds.'    When I say, "Alexa, open "Side Blinds,"  the response is,  "'Side Blinds' can't support that."

Can anyone explain how they got their's working?

Just to clarify, my iBlinds are working fine with Vera, but they don't show up in the Manage Alexa dialog. I even tried setting up a scene within Vera, which works fine and is listed in the Manage Alexa box, but it is ignored by Alexa.   This is not an issue with iBlinds, but with Alexa's implementation with Vera.

On a side note, Vera is working in Google Home to control the blinds.

Have you already tried deleting the iblinds device from Alexa & tried having her look for devices again to find/add again?

I found this information on Vera's site regarding Alexa. Is any of it helpful?

__________________________________________________________________________________
  • Device types that have security or safety considerations are prohibited at this time. Alexa will not discover or execute commands on them.

  • When customizing device names, do not use special characters as Alexa will not recognize these special characters.

The following devices are not allowed:

  • Door Locks
  • Garage Doors
  • Security Systems
  • Security Sensors
  • Cooking Appliances
  • Cameras
The prohibited devices also cannot be used in scenes. If a scene contains a prohibited device, it will not work with Alexa.

The Vera Smart Home Skill API currently supports lights, switches, smart plugs and thermostats, including turning devices on and off, dimming lights, and thermostat controls.

Alexa can control devices such as Turn off/on, dim/brighten lights and change the thermostat temperature. It can also provide the status of the supported devices and answer queries.

Is Vera identifying iblinds as a light dimmer? If so, Alexa should be able to operate it.

We also had one user that wrote a Wink shortcut recipe in IFTTT as a workaround to get it to work with Alexa. You could try that with Vera, as well.

The iBlinds are showing up as blinds in Vera, as they should.  Alexa does not have a category for blinds, so iBlinds does not show up as a controllable device in the Vera "Manage Alexa" dialog.

I have now created scenes in Vera, such as "Open Blinds," which, in my scene, will open the blinds 60% (as desired).  I also created a scene called "Close Blinds," which will close the blinds 100%.  Alexa treats the scene as a switch, so I have to say, "Turn On 'Open Blinds'," and "Turn On 'Close Blinds.'"  Very awkward and clunky.  When I ask Alexa to set Blinds 60%, the response is still, "Blinds doesn't support that."

Google Assistant works much better with Vera, responding to simple commands, such as Open, Close and Set blinds to __%.

So, the problem - as I see it - lies with Alexa.

This has been discussed in one of Vera's forums. The problem is apparently with the Vera plugin for Alexa. Vera has talked vaguely about an update but knowing how fast it normally moves I wouldn't hold my breath.

I just finished setting up 3 iBlinds on Vera Lite.  They come in as Dimmer switches. Anyway had to change the config files in the device Advanced item config to DeviceFile = D_WindowCovering1.xml and Device Json = D_WindowCovering1.json  and device type to urn:schemas-micasaverde-com:device:WindowCovering:1   ..... it then appears correctly as a Window Blind with its corresponding controls. you might need to reload engine

I also got it show up in Alexa .  You have to remove the skill in Amazon Alexa page for Vera and simply add the Skill back and then it will see the new devices in Vera and show you to give it a simple name, once you save add the devices in to Amazon Alexa it appears correctly.

Commands such as "Alexa Open Blinds" works fine, but you have to use the Routine option in Alexa App to get more plain language versus saying Alexa Turn " Open Blinds" . Mine works with saying  "Alexa Turn up   Open Blinds 30% "  and  " Alexa Turn Down Open Blinds 100%"

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the update.  While iBlinds works well with the Vera interface, the Alexa skill remains a problem.  I don't know why it hasn't been fixed or who's responsible.  Instead of saying clunky phrases to get it to work, I bought a Google Home mini and set it up with Vera and Alexa.  Now, I can say simple phrases like, 'Open blinds 60-percent' or 'Set blinds 100-percent (to close)'.  Oddly, I can't simply say 'close blinds.'  I have to say 'turn on blinds', which I guess, makes sense.

Its actually working pretty good  on Alexa. I can say "Alexa Turn up Blinds 60%" and it works fine. Also I can Alexa Turn down blinds 100% and it works .  The other thing available in alexa app is in menu, click routines, create a routine with simple words "Open Blinds" "Close Blinds"  "Open Blinds 30%" and so on.
